1While Ezra prayed and made confession, weeping and casting himself down before the house of God, a very great assembly of men, women, and children, gathered to him out of Israel, for the people wept bitterly.2And Shecaniah the son of Jehiel, of the sons of Elam, addressed Ezra: “We have broken faith with our God and have married foreign women from the peoples of the land, but even now there is hope for Israel in spite of this.3Therefore let us make a covenant with our God to put away all these wives and their children, according to the counsel of my lord and of those who tremble at the commandment of our God, and let it be done according to the Law.4Arise, for it is your task, and we are with you; be strong and do it.”5Then Ezra arose and made the leading priests and Levites and all Israel take an oath that they would do as had been said. So they took the oath. English Standard Version (ESV) · All English Scripture quotations on this page are ESV.
The Story Behind the Passage
In 1983, the Korean broadcaster KBS aired a one-hour program to help families separated by the Korean War find each other. It ran live for 138 days and 453 hours. About 100,000 people applied, about 10,000 families were reunited, and in 2015 the broadcast was added to UNESCO's Memory of the World. Whatever the reason, families being torn apart is deeply painful. Yet there was a time when a community that believed in God decided to send families away. That is the story of Ezra 9–10.
What happened?
The southern kingdom of Judah, which had turned from God to idols, falls to Babylon. Jerusalem and the temple are destroyed, and many are taken captive to Babylon.
- 70년70 years포로 생활. Life in exile, the period God had announced through the prophet Jeremiah.
God moves the heart of King Cyrus of Persia, and the exiles are allowed to go home and rebuild the temple.
About 80 years later, Ezra returns. He finds that the people, and even priests and Levites, have married women from the surrounding nations.
From a human point of view, this is understandable. The returnees looked like heroes coming home, but in reality they had nothing. During those 70 years, other peoples had moved in and settled the land. Marrying into those families was the fastest way to start over. And after a long exile, their sense of being God's chosen people had grown weak.
In the Law, God had forbidden marriage with the surrounding nations, because it would bring idol worship in and lead the people away from Him (Deut 7:3–4). That is exactly how Judah had fallen. Now, just after returning from God's discipline, the same sin was happening again. Ezra tore his clothes, pulled hair from his head and beard, and sat appalled (9:3). Then he wept and confessed the people's sin as if it were his own. Today's passage is the people's response. In the end, the community decided to send away the foreign wives and their children. Families were separated.

A Closer Look at the Decision
The sermon doesn't simply call this decision right or wrong. It invites us to think about a few things.
It went further than the Law required
The Law said not to marry foreigners, but it never commanded sending away families that already existed. In fact, some heroes of faith married foreign women: Joseph married Asenath of Egypt, Moses married Zipporah of Midian, Boaz married Ruth of Moab, and David married Maacah of Geshur.
Why go that far?
Seventy years of exile had shaken them to the core. They had believed God's city Jerusalem could never fall, yet the city was destroyed and their king was blinded and dragged away. The captives suffered forced labor and heavy taxes, and some died as conscripts in foreign wars. This shared wound, a collective trauma, became a desperate resolve never again to lose their identity as God's people. Oxford scholar Katherine Southwood describes how the trauma of exile intensified this urgency to protect their identity.
God did not command it directly
The familiar Old Testament phrase "the LORD commanded" doesn't appear here. Shecaniah, a member of the community, proposed it. Ezra, the spiritual leader, accepted it. The people agreed. Sometimes, rather than speaking directly, God wants His community to gather its wisdom and seek His will together.
Some people disagreed
10:15Only Jonathan the son of Asahel and Jahzeiah the son of Tikvah opposed this, and Meshullam and Shabbethai the Levite supported them.
It was not unanimous. In the wilderness, Korah rebelled against Moses and the earth swallowed him. But those who opposed Ezra, "the second Moses," are not condemned by God, by the community, or by Scripture. The majority valued restoring the Law and repentance. The minority likely valued protecting families and children. Both are values God cares about. The decision followed the majority, the minority respected it, and the community stayed united.
How did God see this decision?
The book of Ezra ends abruptly, after listing the names:
10:44All these had married foreign women, and some of the women had even borne children.
Does this mean it was all the more painful because there were children, or that the decision was a mistake? It isn't clear. Pastor Kim sees this as an intentional ambiguity, given so that we would reflect on it before God.
Looking at the whole Bible, we see two things. God kept using Ezra ("the hand of the LORD his God was on him," chapters 7–8), and in Nehemiah 8–9 the people fast and repent before the Word. God accepted their sincere desire for holiness. But the decision is not a rule for all times. Ruth the Moabite is in the family line of David and of Jesus, and in the New Testament Paul says not to leave an unbelieving spouse who wants to stay (1 Cor 7:13). Ezra's decision was a special measure for that time only.
Key Points & Discussion Questions
Pursue God's Word together with the community's calling for this time
Every community of God has a special calling for its time. Sometimes it is guarding the gospel. Sometimes it is reforming and renewing the church. It may be raising the next generation in faith, healing a wounded community, or breaking a cycle of unhealthy habits.
For Ezra, that calling was rebuilding the Word and helping God's people live as God's people. So he saw the mixed marriages as undermining that calling, and he wept in repentance. We need to ask too: What must we protect, and what habits must we break? What kind of church will we pass on to the next generation? Do we share the longing for God's holiness that the people of Ezra's day had?
- Q1For Ezra's community, the calling of their time was restoring the Word and holiness. What calling does our community need right now, and how can we seek God's will together?
- Q2In our families and our church, what must we hold onto no matter what, and what can change with the times? Is there a legacy of faith you especially want to pass on to the next generation, to our children?
Seek God's will patiently amid differing opinions
Shecaniah's family is not on the list of those who married foreign wives. Yet he says, "We have broken faith with our God" (v. 2). He took the community's sin as "our problem," not "their problem."
Jesus is the one who breaks down walls and makes us one. Ezra tried to protect identity by sending outsiders away, but Jesus built our identity by giving Himself.
2:14For he himself is our peace, who has made us both one and has broken down in his flesh the dividing wall of hostilityEphesians 2:141914년 크리스마스 휴전. 1차 세계대전 중 크리스마스 이브에, 독일군 참호에서 '고요한 밤 거룩한 밤'이 들려오자 영국군도 따라 불렀습니다.
The Christmas Truce of 1914. On Christmas Eve during World War I, German soldiers began singing "Silent Night," and British soldiers joined in. That day both sides laid down their weapons, came out of the trenches, talked, and even played soccer. If Jesus, who could stop even a war, is the head of our church, we too must lay down our weapons. Keeping the community united matters far more than winning my point.
Tinted glasses. When you wear tinted glasses, the whole world looks that color. The fix is to take them off. When we find a value God treasures in someone who thinks differently, our differences become a blessing instead of a burden. The question shifts from "Who is right and who is wrong?" to "What is God's calling for us right now?"
- Q1Shecaniah hadn't done anything wrong himself, yet he confessed, "We have broken faith." What would it mean for you to see the community's struggles as "our problem" rather than "their problem"?
- Q2Think of someone at home, at work, or at church who sees things differently from you. Could you be looking at them through tinted glasses? What value might they be holding dear?
- Q3Share a time when a disagreement actually deepened a relationship or led to a better outcome. What made that possible?
Trust God's perfect love, which transcends our imperfect decisions
Was the decision of Ezra's community perfect? Their passion was pure, but the decision was not perfect. Did God abandon them? No. He blessed them and kept building them up, because He loved them. God's perfect love goes beyond our imperfect decisions and leads the community toward good.
The church's hope is not in our being perfect. It is in the perfect love of Jesus, who gave His life for the church. Jesus calls it "my church." Because Jesus owns the church, there is hope even when we fall short.
5:25–27Husbands, love your wives, as Christ loved the church and gave himself up for her, that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word, so that he might present the church to himself in splendor, without spot or wrinkle or any such thing, that she might be holy and without blemish. 16:18And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.Matthew 16:18목사님은 설교를 마치며, 우리 AKPC가 이 초월적 사랑을 믿고 서로 포용하며, 기도로 어려운 시기를 이겨 내는 공동체가 되기를 축복하셨습니다.
Pastor Kim closed by blessing AKPC to be a community that trusts this transcendent love, embraces one another, and gets through difficult seasons in prayer.
- Q1Jesus calls the church "my church" (Matt 16:18). When the church goes through a hard season, how does knowing that Jesus is its owner comfort you or give you hope?
- Q2Have you experienced God leading you to good even through an imperfect decision, your own or your community's?
- Q3What is one small step you can take this week to help our small group become a community that embraces one another more and bears with one another more patiently?
